Did you know that over 3 million cats and dogs which are taken to the animal sanctuaries are euthanized each year? Among them, 2.4 million (80%) are treatable and healthy and could’ve been adopted. Almost 70% cats are euthanized in the shelters. The purpose of telling you these stats is that you should try your best to adopt these poor souls. But what if you find a stray cat? Here is a step-by-step guide for you:

Before you step in to help the stray kitten, it is imperative to read the visual cues. There is a possibility that the mother could be nearby, watching you closely and waiting for you to leave. Therefore, it is best to keep some distance from the kitten. Try to give as much time to the mama as you can because it can return even after a day. Come back to check the next day. If you notice that the mother does come, then inform the local charity or animal rescue group. In the case the mama doesn’t come, it is time for you to help the young kitten.

Step #2: Consider A Few Things First

If you think that you cannot provide immediate care to the stray kitten, then you should contact someone who can. There has to be no hesitation in asking someone for help as it is a good deed that might save poor kitten’s life. You can also contact an organization in your area that takes care of stray cats.

Step #3: Assess the Condition of the Kitten

Regardless of the age of the kitten, it is important for you to make sure that it is breathing properly. Check if the kitten is crying or squalling due to lack of nutrition or if it is underweight. Do make sure to check if the fur of the kitten is matted or if there is significant lethargy. If there is any discharge from eyes or nose, you should wait no more and immediately take the kitten to the vet.

Step #4: Make Your Mind

If you believe that you cannot take proper care of the kitten or if it is too aggressive for you to handle, call an animal rescue group. If you notice that the cat is growling and hissing when approaching, it is best to keep a distance as it may scratch or bite if frightened. If the kitten is overly friendly then there is a high possibility that it may be someone’s pet. You can either take it in and inform everyone about the lost kitten or call an animal rescue group. If you’ve made the decision to take in the stray cat, you should keep in mind that it becomes your responsibility to take proper care of that innocent soul.

Try to create a barrier and slowly secure the parameter. You should never rush at it because it may make the kitten feel like it is being trapped. Entice the stray kitten with some milk or food, kneel on the ground, and speak calmly. Get the animal into a cardboard box, a blanket, or your car.

Step #6: Return Home With The Stray Cat and Accommodate It

Once you’ve taken the kitten to your home, give it food and water. If you notice that it is not eating anything, take it to the vet. If even it starts eating straight away, it is best to take the kitten to the vet the next day. The vet will check kitten’s health and may deworm it as well.

Step #7: Give It All The Love In The World

If you ever come across a stray cat, try to follow the steps mentioned above as they might help that kitten’s life. If you notice that the kitten is left by the mama and its health is deteriorating, then it is best to take it in. Provide the best care to the kitten and make it a part of your family. We can assure you that you won’t regret this decision.
